The Genius (and Horror) of Avatar's Urban Design
Video DiscussionWhat a fun video. As someone who enjoys Avatar the Last Air Bender and watching urban design youtube videos, this was a treat. I honestly learned a lot of interesting things about urban design (i.e. the flaws of one way transit lines and detroit's people mover). Thinking more about the daily life of Earth Kingdom citizens was also interesting (i.e. that lack of a ring line means that it requires lower ring citizens to travel miles to reach a transit hub). At the end of the day, this is just an animated kids show, and so maybe not super realistic...but it shows how design affects daily life. It most closely reminds me of Robert Moses racist influence on NYC urban design (building low clearance bridges to prevent buses with low income people from visiting parts of the city). Also, wow, I really appreciate the world building of the authors behing Avatar.
